Bill Russell: A história do jogador com mais títulos da NBA e que deixou um legado memorável dentro e fora das quadras.
William Fenton Russell, conhecido popularmente apenas como Bill Russell, foi um dos jogadores e treinadores de maior sucesso da história da NBA. Atuou majoritariamente como Pivô pela franquia dos Boston Celtics e foi por muito tempo considerado como o jogador mais dominante de toda a liga. Neste artigo iremos revisitar a vida completa do jogador e treinador que infelizmente nos deixou no último domingo.
Infância
Em 12 de fevereiro de 1934, na cidade de Monroe, Luisiana, nasceu Bill Russell. Apesar de uma carreira repleta de glórias e muito sucesso, a sua condição quando jovem era bastante complicada e sua família sofreu muito com a segregação racial que ocorria no período. Como praticamente todo o sul dos Estados Unidos na época, o estado da Luisiana era extremamente racista e a família inteira de Russell sofria com os abusos, como somente ser atendido em estabelecimentos após pessoas de pele branca, proibição de vestimentas consideradas exclusivas para brancos, empregos em situações precárias e desrespeito em todas as esferas da sociedade. Quando Bill tinha 8 anos, a família se mudou para Oakland em busca de trabalho e melhores condições de vida, mas com a segunda guerra mundial acontecendo e o país menos aquecido economicamente, os Russells caíram na pobreza e tiveram de viver por vários anos em projetos habitacionais e com auxílios públicos para famílias em situação de pobreza. Aos 12 anos, a mãe de Russell faleceu e o garoto ficou sob os cuidados do pai, que trabalhou muito para sustentar a família e recebeu diversas homenagens do filho, que classifica o pai como um herói por todo o esforço que exerceu para manter os sonhos de seus filhos vivos.
Início no Basquete
A trajetória de Russell no basquete não começou nada bem. Seu porte físico e envergadura sempre chamaram a atenção dos treinadores, mas a falta de fundamentos e baixo entendimento do jogo fizeram com que Russell fosse cortado do time na primeira escola em que atuou. Futuramente, já em outra escola, Russell teve o apoio de seu novo treinador, que viu um potencial grande no jovem e o incentivou a trabalhar no desenvolvimento do seu jogo. Essa foi uma das primeiras boas experiências de Russell com um treinador branco, visto que a maioria dos técnicos que trabalharam com o jogador antes não respeitavam o garoto.
Com o treinamento de alguns fundamentos e uma evolução física considerável, Russell se tornou um jogador de basquete muito interessante, e conquistou dois títulos dos campeonatos de ensino médio que disputou. Russell se destacava principalmente pela sua capacidade de defensiva e uma técnica bastante peculiar, que hoje em dia é amplamente utilizada em todas as partidas, que é o bloqueio ou toco. Russell era muito alto e utilizava isso ao seu favor. Quando algum jogador iniciava um movimento de arremesso, Russell Pulava com os braços esticados para cima e conseguia bloquear a trajetória da bola, evitando assim muitos pontos contra seu time.
Basquete Universitário
Chegando ao final do ensino médio, Russell passou a procurar oportunidades de times universitários e estava aberto a receber propostas, mas sua cor de pele infelizmente era um empecilho para a maioria dos recrutadores, que ignoravam as atuações do jogador em decorrência de sua cor. A história só mudou quando um recrutador da universidade de San Francisco viu um potencial interessante no jogador e decidiu oferecer uma bolsa de estudos para o jovem. Russell prontamente aceitou e viu que o basquete era o melhor caminho que tinha para se livrar da pobreza e dos julgamentos da sociedade, e que por isso iria se dedicar totalmente ao seu desenvolvimento nas quadras.
Já no time da universidade, Russell se tornou o pivô titular do time e o maior destaque defensivo da equipe. Além disso, influenciou o treinador a aceitar e dar espaço para mais jogadores negros, e em 1954 se tornou o primeiro grande time universitário a ter três negros jogando como titulares. O desempenho de Russell incomodava tanto os adversários que a NCAA (organização da liga de basquete universitário) alterou algumas das regras em vigor para que jogadores como Russell não acabassem totalmente com o jogo. Uma das regras criadas foi a de interferência. Nesse caso, o jogador não poderia mais bloquear uma bola que já estivesse no caminho da cesta e apenas no momento do arremesso.
Infelizmente, o time da USF (universidade de San Francisco) sofria muito com as injúrias raciais e o desrespeito em relação a sua cor de pele. Em um hotel em Oklahoma, Russell e seus companheiros negros foram proibidos de se hospedar no local, e por isso tiveram de acampar em dormitórios da faculdade. Russell também teve prêmios que seriam vencidos pelo jogador entregues a outros atletas brancos, mesmo que seu desempenho fosse muito superior. Mas a cor da pele o impedia de vencer os títulos individuais. Russell soube lidar bem com esses problemas e se manteve focado em ajudar a equipe e ganhar títulos coletivos.
Russell ainda ajudou a universidade fora do basquete, pois participou de algumas provas de atletismo na categoria de salto em altura, se tornando inclusive um destaque na modalidade.
Basquete Profissional
Ainda na universidade, o Harlem Globetrotters tentou contratar Russell para seu elenco, mas o jogador não aceitou a proposta em decorrência do péssimo tratamento recebido pelos dirigentes dos Globetrotters. As negociações ocorriam apenas com o técnico e em nenhum momento Russell foi consultado. Além disso, um comediante foi enviado para entreter Russell enquanto os dirigentes tentavam fechar um acordo com o técnico do time. Russell prontamente recusou a proposta e seguiu no time da universidade.
Seu primeiro grande feito como jogador foi nas olimpíadas de 1956, disputadas na Austrália. Russell era o capitão da equipe e foi o líder de pontuação da campanha que terminou em medalha de ouro, derrotando a União Soviética na final. Russell conseguiu médias de 14,1 pontos por jogo durante toda a competição.
Após recusar as propostas do Globetrotters, Russell se inscreveu no Draft de 1956 da NBA. A franquia mais interessada em contar com os serviços de Russell eram os Celtics, mas como vinham de uma boa temporada, a escolha de draft do time de Boston seria uma das últimas, o que tornaria quase impossível escolher Bill Russell. Porém, em um movimento bastante inteligente, os Celtics fizeram um acordo com o St. Louis Hawks, que tinha uma escolha alta mas não estava em busca de um pivô e não estava disposto a pagar o bônus de assinatura que Russell pedia para assinar com alguma franquia. Na segunda escolha, os Hawks escolheram Russell, que foi prontamente trocado para os Celtics em troca de dois jogadores do elenco Celta. Além de ser um grande campeão dentro das quadras, Russell foi um grande ícone no que diz respeito a reivindicações de políticas sociais justas e igualitárias. Em 1964, uma hora antes do All-Star game da NBA, Russell liderou uma greve e convenceu os jogadores de que só deveriam entrar em quadra quando a liga criasse um fundo de pensão e seguros para os jogadores, que não tinham nenhum benefício parecido na época. A liga cedeu às reivindicações em questão de minutos e atendeu os pedidos dos jogadores. Russell sempre foi muito cético com entrevistas, fãs e autógrafos. O jogador sempre teve uma relação complicada com a torcida dos Celtics pois passou por diversas situações desconfortáveis em relação a xingamentos e ofensas raciais vindas da própria torcida. Russell lutou até o final de sua vida contra o racismo e sempre teve papel ativo na discussão de novas políticas capazes de punir e diminuir a quantidade de crimes raciais cometidos.
Falecimento
No dia 31/07/2022, uma nota oficial no perfil do jogador em uma rede social anunciou o seu falecimento. A morte foi considerada como natural, sem nenhum problema específico. Russell deixa um legado incrível para os fãs da NBA dentro e fora das quadras, e com certeza jamais será esquecido pela franquia de Boston e todos os amantes da bola laranja.
